Robotics Software Engineer

We are seeking a Robotics Software Engineer to drive the development of our robotic manipulation capabilities. In this role, you will focus on the control, planning, and perception required for robotic arms to interact with their environment. You will work primarily in ROS 2, bridging the gap between high-level joint trajectory planning algorithms and real-time hardware control.

This is a Full-Time onsite opportunity and our office is based in San Mateo.

Responsibilities

  • Manipulation Planning: Develop and tune motion planning pipelines using MoveIt 2 to ensure collision-free, smooth trajectory generation for multi-DOF robotic arms.

  • ROS 2 Architecture: Architect and implement high-performance ROS 2 nodes with a focus on lifecycle management and real-time constraints.

  • Kinematics & Control: Implement and validate Inverse Kinematics (IK) solvers and forward kinematics; interface with hardware drivers to ensure precise motor control.

  • Perception Integration: Integrate vision systems (RGB-D cameras and 3D cameras) to enable tasks such as object detection, pose estimation, and dynamic grasping.

  • Simulation: Create accurate simulation environments in Gazebo or Isaac Sim to test manipulation logic and verify URDF/Xacro models before hardware deployment.

  • Tooling: Write Python scripts for automated testing, data analysis, and system orchestration to support the core C++ codebase.

Qualifications

Required:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • ROS 2 Proficiency: Strong experience with the ROS 2 ecosystem (Humble or Jazzy), including DDS configuration, parameter servers, and composition.

  • C++ (Preferred): production-level C++ (14/17 or newer) skills, with an understanding of memory management, pointers, and real-time coding standards.

  • Python (Required): High fluency in Python for scripting, tooling, and rapid prototyping.

  • Manipulation Frameworks: Hands-on experience with MoveIt / MoveIt 2, including configuration, OMPL (Open Motion Planning Library), and collision checking.

  • Math Fundamentals: Solid grasp of 3D geometry, linear algebra, and coordinate frame transformations (TF2).

  • Linux Environment: Comfort working in a Linux terminal, including bash scripting and version control with Git.

Preferred:

  • Relevant professional cloud certification (e.g., AWS Developer/Architect, Microsoft Azure Developer/Architect, Google Cloud Developer/Architect)

  • Experience with specific robotic arms (e.g. Trossen, KUKA, etc).

  • Knowledge of ros2_control and writing custom hardware interfaces.

  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker) for robotic applications.

  • Experience with machine learning approaches for grasping or reinforcement learning in robotics.

Collaboration and Soft Skills:

  • Excellent technical communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams (AI Engineers, Product Managers, other software teams).

  • Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex technical issues across cloud, web, and edge environments.

  • Experience working effectively within an Agile/Scrum development methodology.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and stock options

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • Term life insurance

  • 401(k) without employer matching

  • Discretionary time off (DTO) leave policy
