San Francisco, CA. September 7, 2023 – Kaliber Labs has announced that Dr. John Sperling, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, has joined the company’s Surgeon Advisory Board.
“We are excited to have Dr. Sperling as a member of our team of surgeon advisors,” said Kaliber CEO Ray Rahman. “His clinical expertise and commitment to research have given him deep, evidence-based insight into orthopedics, including a grasp of the role and impacts of medical technology. He joins us with a unique perspective on innovation across the medical technology and device space.”
A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Dr. Sperling completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic and a Fellowship for Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. A Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, he is an internationally recognized expert on primary and revision shoulder surgery and recipient of both the Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award (2014) and the Charles S. Neer Award (2003). At the Mayo Clinic and nationally, Dr. Sperling has served in numerous leadership roles guiding work designed to evaluate technologies across surgical specialties. Dr. Sperling also maintains active involvement in clinical research. He is part of a team that has identified promising molecular pathways to aid patients suffering from rotator cuff disease and shoulder arthritis. He is author of more than 260 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to speak on orthopedic topics worldwide.
In addition to his work as a clinician and researcher, Dr. Sperling has an MBA in medical group management and a strong interest in medical economics. He has worked with health care companies, from start-ups to large corporations, and acted as advisor to a number of venture capital firms. He has also been active in the development and commercialization of medical devices.
“AI solutions signal the dawn of a new phase of medical technology,” Dr. Sperling stated. “The tools being developed by Kaliber promise to drive understanding and development of innovative treatment modalities that will help patients with the pain and loss of quality of life associated with orthopedic injuries.”
