Kaliber Launches First-of-Its-Kind Al-Powered Patient Communication Software for Orthopedic Surgery

Kaliber Labs is accelerating patient-centric care in orthopedic surgery powered by NVIDIA Clara Holoscan

San Francisco, CA. September 20, 2022 - Kaliber Labs, a surgical Al startup building comprehensive solutions for orthopedic surgery, today announces the launch of the first Al-powered, patient communication software to deliver personalized intraoperative insights directly to patients. The product, Rekap for Patients, is designed to close communication gaps between surgery providers and their patients, and empower patients in their recovery with actionable information.

Powered by Kaliber's proprietary Al, Rekap automatically generates personalized surgical reports containing clinical details previously unavailable outside the OR. The reports provide a surgeon's-eye view of arthroscopic procedures to help patients develop a better understanding of their diagnoses, treatments, and anatomy to be addressed in physical therapy. Developed with the guidance of Kaliber's Surgeon Advisory Board—which consists of twenty-four leading orthopedic surgeons who provide input and feedback on the company's products in development—Rekap is aimed to transform the patient experience and become a model for personalized communications in minimally invasive surgery.

Rekap is the premiere product in Kaliber’s developing suite of solutions driven by surgical insights. Using novel computer vision and machine learning algorithms, Kaliber analyzes intraoperative surgical video to reveal the details of arthroscopic procedures and complement surgeon post-op notes with documented facts. The insights generated by Kaliber’s technology have future applications not only in the postoperative phase of surgery, supported by Rekap, but also in the intraoperative phase and in surgery billing and administration.

“Rekap gives surgeons a completely new way to analyze and convey the nature of their work beyond the OR,” said Kaliber CEO Ray Rahman. “We do this automatically, in real time, and with the speed and precision only Al can offer. From there, we can bring more trust and transparency to the patient-provider relationship. Our goal is to demystify surgery to help patients better engage and commit to their recovery.”

Orthopedic surgery is the fastest growing surgical field in the world; an estimated 7 million procedures are performed annually in the U.S. alone. Domestic drivers include an aging baby-boomer population with active lifestyles and ready access to orthopedic care. Kaliber is building patient-centered solutions in response to this growth and to meet increasing demand for more personalized interactions.

Kaliber's leadership collectively brings decades of experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, medical device development, and technological innovation. The company's Surgeon Advisory Board, which includes the current and past two presidents of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), provides ongoing support to align Kaliber's products with clinical needs and practices in the field. Kaliber is a member of NVIDIA Inception, a free program for cutting-edge startups, and enables its inferencing power for long-running procedures with the NVIDIA Clara Holoscan platform.
